The CMPC unit in Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul, broke a new record. The pulp production registered in 2022 reached the historical mark of 2,063,093 tons, surpassing the previous year which represented the highest volume until then.

According to the company, more than 90% of the production was destined for export to markets in Europe and Asia, especially China. The rest is directed to the Brazilian production chain.

“It is a joy to be able, once again, to reach such a significant record and which makes tangible the efforts made in all areas so that we can reach such an expressive production number  in our unit”, said Mauricio Harger, general director of CMPC Brasil.

According to data released by the Federation of Industries of the State of Espírito Santo – FINDES, pulp and paper production had a good performance in 2022 in the state. Figures revealed in February indicate that increased demand from the foreign market contributed to the production of cultivated trees products   growing by 7.3% in 2022, compared to 2021.

The data were compiled by Findes’ Industry Observatory and are part of the IBGE’s Monthly Industrial Production (PIM) survey. The PIM also showed that the general industry of Espírito Santo closed 2022 with a decrease of 8.4%, compared to the previous year, compared to the 0.7% reduction registered by the country. Among the main responsible for the negative indicator in Espírito Santo are the extractive industry (-18.7%) and some sectors of the manufacturing industry (-3.5%).

The executive manager of the Industry Observatory and chief economist at Findes, Marília Silva, comments that, in the case of the manufacturing industry in Espírito Santo, only the manufacture of cellulose, paper and paper products recorded growth in 2022. “Elements such as positive demand and solid for short fiber in North America, Europe and China helped sustain the performance of this activity in the state. Throughout 2022, other specific factors also contributed to the growth of pulp production and exports from Espírito Santo, such as delays in the installation of new projects in Latin America, which may have favored Espírito Santo’s supply of these products in the foreign market”, explains Marília.

A partnership between Suzano and Corteva will contribute to the scientific development and genetic improvement of eucalyptus trees. FuturaGene, Suzano’s biotechnology division, is sharing a new eucalyptus reference genome with the scientific community.

Access to this genome will allow scientists from private and public institutions to carry out their own research on eucalyptus crops. Although this genus already has an extraordinary growth in Brazil, this new genome can contribute to, in addition to rapid growth, allowing the development of even better-quality wood. The new eucalyptus reference genome could generate more resilient trees and healthier forests, contributing to even more sustainable wood production.

The action is not unprecedented. In 2014, Suzano has donated the BRASUZ1 Eucalyptus grandis clone, to be used as the basis for a public project to sequence the first eucalyptus genome.

Sylvamo, the paper company of the world, entered into a partnership with the Municipal Department of Education of Mogi Guaçu/SP to implement the Ejatec program (Education of Young People and Adults – Secondary or High school/Technical Education) in the municipality. With the project, in addition to basic high school education, students will receive a professional qualification course.

Initially, the program will be for a group of 25 employees of Sylvamo do Brasil, who will have classes at the Guaçuana Educational Foundation (FEG), from Monday to Friday, from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Besides to high school content, students will take a technical course in automation.

For the municipal secretary of Education of Mogi Guaçu, Paulo Paliari, the experience will serve as a model for new classes. “Based on this, we will have excellent guidance so that, in the future, we can evaluate the possibility of extending the program to thepopulation of Guaçuana in general, as well as opening other technical training courses”, he commented.

The 5th edition of Expoforest, the world’s largest dynamic forestry fair, will be held in the city of Guatapará, in the Ribeirão Preto region and within one of the main forestry centers of São Paulo.  São Paulo state has an area of 1.252 million hectares with planted forests. The main genus of commercial trees are eucalyptus (981 thousand ha), pine (151 thousand ha) and rubber tree (120 thousand ha).

São Paulo is the second state with the largest area of planted forests, only behind to Minas Gerais state. “When we talk about job creation, the São Paulo forestry sector is responsible for approximately 150,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to the Ministry of Labor”, explains the forestry engineer and executive director of Florestar São Paulo, Fernanda Abilio.

Manoel Browne, director of Institutional, Governmental and Community Relations at Bracell, a company associated to Florestar, recently assumed the presidency of the association’s Board of Directors for the 2023/2024 biennium. He points out that: “the planted tree sector makes a great contribution to the country, from job creation to economy boosting. But there is still room for the sector to significantly contribute to expanding benefits within the ESG agenda. We are going to work to ensure that the Association plays a leading role in the state of São Paulo for this positive agenda”, concludes Browne.

The government of Mato Grosso do Sul projects an expansion of 300 thousand hectares, still in 2023, with areas of eucalyptus planted forests in the state. According to the state government, this volume of wood should meet, in the short term, not only the pulp sector growth as well as energy and furniture.

In a meeting with Governor Eduardo Riedel and with the Secretary for Environment and Development, Jaime Verruck, representatives of the Mato Grosso do Sul state Association of Producers and Consumers of Planted Forests, Reflore MS, addressed the forest sector expansion and the infrastructure, production diversification, livestock-forest integration and carbon neutrality. “Part of the development of the Mato Grosso do Sul also involves this issue of forests. It is from them that will come out the raw material for various undertakings that will ensure our quest for a prosperous state”, said the governor.

The production diversification linked to the wood sector was indicated as an important point in the business expansion within Mato Grosso do Sul. Today, mostly of the wood produced in the state goes to power generatation or pulp production.
