Starting in March, the Logistics and Support Center of the National Center for Preventing and Combating Forest Fires, in Brasília (Federal District), began operating. The delivery of the installations is part of the Amazon Fund’s support to the National Center for the Prevention and Combat of Forest Fires – Prevfogo, the main federal structure in the country with operations, both in the direct fight against forest fires and unauthorized burnings, and in inducing changes in the culture of the use of fire in agriculture. Supported by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to improve Prevfogo’s ability to monitor and respond to fires, the logistics center was installed at Ibama’s headquarters.

The cultivated tree sector added a gross revenue of BRL 244.6 billion in 2021. The numbers were released by the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá) and they are in the summary “Get to know the cultivated tree sector”, available on the institution’s website. The sector was also responsible for the export of US$ 11.8 billion in products and 2.8 million jobs in the country.

There are more than 5,000 bioproducts available to society, such as paper packaging, fabric, books, diapers, laminate floors and wooden furniture, among many others. The cultivated tree industry is recognized around the world for being sustainable and economically viable.

Caring for the environment is at the heart of the strategy of a sector that plants, harvests and replants, usually in previously degraded areas. Currently, there are 9.93 million hectares of productive areas and another 6.05 million hectares conserved with native vegetation, an extension larger than the state of Rio de Janeiro, between RPPNs (Private Natural Heritage Reserve), APPs (Permanent preservation area), and RLs (Legal reserves).

Cellulose is one of the main products from the Brazilian planted forests. Our country is one of the world’s largest pulp producers and exporters. In 2022 there was a production record of 25 million tons.

The figures were presented in the Cenários Ibá bulletin, produced and published by the Brazilian Tree Industry. According to the publication, in addition to the cellulose record, with 25 million tons, paper production reached 11 million tons. The volume of exports followed historical marks and extend to the highest level, getting to 19.1 million tons of pulp sold to other countries in the period and 2.5 million tons of paper. The great increase in exports resulted in a record of US$ 11.6 billion in foreign exchange (+28.7%), and a balance of US$ 10.5 billion in the sector’s trade balance (+32%).

“This is a sector that makes an intelligent use of the land, takes care of people, respects nature and generates wealth for the country”, explains Paulo Hartung, executive president of Ibá.

Among the countries who bought the most Brazilian pulp, China is still in the lead, with the acquisition of US$ 3.3 billion of the product in 2022. Latin America emerges as the main market for paper exports (US$ 1.9 billion), a significant increase of 56.4% compared to 2021. In the case of wood panels, North America became foremost destination for exports in 2022, totaling US$ 204.6 million.
