THE FORESTRY SECTOR IN NUMBERS

Two important forest-based associations, both from the South Region of Brazil, have launched sectoral studies in the end of 2022. The Paraná Association of Forest Based Companies (APRE) published the APRE 2022 Sectorial Study, a document with the main data on the planted forest sector in Paraná. In addition to the physical and digital versions, APRE also made an interactive panel available on its website. Interested parties can intuitively and interactively access the main data contained in the Sectorial Study.

As part of the study, a mapping showed that there are 1.17 million hectares planted with trees for commercial purposes in the state of Paraná. The pine genus is the main one, with approximately 714 thousand hectares, equivalent to 60.6% of the total. Paraná is the state with the largest area planted with pine in Brazil. The area with eucalyptus is almost 450 thousand hectares, corresponding to 38.2% of the forest plantations in the state.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the Gaucho Association of Forestry Companies (Ageflor) released a data and facts report on the forest-based sector of Rio Grande do Sul in 2022 (base year 2021).

According to the document, Rio Grande do Sul is responsible for 935,000 hectares of planted forests, 592,000 hectares of eucalyptus, 289,000 hectares of pine and 50,000 hectares of black wattle.

Forest plantations are present in almost all of the 497 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, with 492 of them having eucalyptus, 329 pine and 75 acacia plantations. The municipalities that stand out are: Encruzilhada do Sul, São Francisco de Paula and Piratini.

The study methodology relied on satellite images, which increased the accuracy of the information. The company that carried out the mapping was Canopy, a pioneer in Brazil for the remote sensing segment applied to mapping, inventory and forest monitoring.
